There are consequences if you fail to pay employees NMW rates.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCurrently, the rates set 1<sup>st<\/sup> October 2013 apply. They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\t21 and over &#8211; &pound;6.31 per hour<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\t18 to 20 &#8211; &pound;5.03 per hour<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tUnder 18 &#8211; &pound;3.72 per hour<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tApprentice &#8211; &pound;2.68 per hour*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\t&nbsp;*This rate for apprentices is for the under 19s or those in their first year. Apprentices over 19 years and past their first year qualify for the rate appropriate to their age.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe following notes are copied from the GOV.UK website.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t<strong>Employees entitled to the NMW are:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\tWorkers must be school leaving age or over to get the minimum wage. (They must turn 16 by the last Friday in June of the school year)<\/p>\n<p>\n\tContracts for payments below the minimum wage are not legally binding. The worker is still entitled to the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWorkers are also entitled to the minimum wage if they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n\t\tpart-time<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tcasual labourers, e.g. someone hired for 1 day<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tagency workers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tworkers and home workers paid by the number of items they make<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tapprentices<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\ttrainees, workers on probation<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tdisabled workers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tagricultural workers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tforeign workers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\tseafarers<\/li>\n<li>\n\t\toffshore workers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n\tAnd don&rsquo;t forget that apprentices under 19 or in their first year get an apprentice rate.<\/p>\n<!-- -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many businesses are unaware that the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rules are monitored by HMRC.
